Measure the layout that will remain after the other work
If a yard or another contractor is changing the seating bases, panels or supporting fittings, include that in the first conversation. Upholstery patterns should describe the arrangement that will actually be installed, rather than a surface that is about to change.
Photograph both the current condition and any agreed layout drawings you already have. Identify unfinished areas so we can discuss when the boat will be ready for the relevant measurements.
One brief for the captain, owner and other trades
Nominate the person who can approve scope and materials, and the person who can provide boat access. They may be different people. Include the vessel name, facility, dock section and the contact responsible for coordinating the visit.
For several decks or cabins, group the request by space: cockpit seating, helm, salon, cabins and canvas. Mark what is being retained. A room-by-room list helps keep an upholstery order separate from unrelated yard work.
Fabrication and fitting belong in the refit schedule
We assess the work and prepare a proposal before taking final patterns for the accepted order. The pieces are made at our Davie workshop. Let us know when the supporting surfaces, adjoining finishes and vessel access will be ready for installation.
If the boat will leave the facility before fitting, provide the next location before dates are agreed. Do not assume a marina listing confirms current contractor-entry arrangements; access must be confirmed with the relevant facility.
Decide whether the order can be split into stages
A complete set may need to be coordinated for fit and appearance. If some seating must remain in use while other pieces are made, explain that requirement at the beginning. Any phased approach and separate fitting visits need to be part of the proposal, not an assumption after work starts.
For a Fort Lauderdale refit conversation
- Share the yard or marina, vessel name and exact boarding position.
- Identify the scope/material approver and the on-site access contact.
- List other work that will change seat bases, panels or attachment points.
- Provide readiness dates, departure plans and any need for phased work.

Before we visit
When should we measure if another contractor is changing the seating?
Describe the changes and their schedule first. We agree the measurement stage against the layout that will remain, so patterns are not based on parts that are about to be replaced.
Can the captain coordinate the visit while the owner approves materials?
Yes, identify each contact and their role in the request. Scope and material decisions, access and the fitting schedule still need a clear agreed point of coordination.
